Ok. Real talk: breastfeeding can cause your nipples to become painfully sensitive, especially in the first few weeks as you and your babe get the hang of it. That’s when even clothing rubbing against your chest can be a source of torment. Medela SoftShells act like a shield to protect your nipples from further irritation.

Nipples are cupped in a silicone shell, touched only by the surrounding air. Holes in the shell allow for air circulation and keep nipples dry even when leaking breast milk. Not only does this make you more comfortable, but it also helps ward off thrush (a yeast infection that thrives in moist environments). Milk leaks are caught by the foam insert in the lower half of the shell.

SoftShells can’t be worn when sleeping though and require quite a bit of maintenance. If the foam insert becomes saturated with milk, you need to rinse and dry it off. The silicone parts also need to be cleaned with soap and water. Additionally, SoftShells need to be sanitized daily. Silicone parts can be boiled, washed on the top rack of a dishwasher, or steam cleaned in a microwave bag created for sanitizing nursing accessories.
